Hernieuwbare energie

De Europese Unie (EU) streeft naar  een competitieve, gegarandeerde en koolstofarme Europese economie. De EU-afhankelijkheid van ingevoerde fossiele brandstoffen (aardolie en aardgas) moet omlaag en de technologische innovatie omhoog. Inzetten op hernieuwbare energiebronnen (bv. wind, zon, water en geothermische energie) vormt hierbij een van de belangrijke strategische pijlers. 

In 2018 bereikten de Europese Commissie, het Europees Parlement en de Raad een akkoord over de 2030-doelstellingen voor hernieuwbare energie. Volgende stap is het verder uitwerken en opvolgen van deze doelstellingen en het opstellen van een langere-termijn visie/strategie.

Hernieuwbare energie

Het Directoraat-Generaal voor Energie (DG ENER) is binnen de Commissie bevoegd voor de ontwikkeling en uitvoering van beleid rond hernieuwbare energie. De huidige EU-commissaris voor (Klimaatactie en) Energie is Miguel Arias Cañete. 

In het Europees Parlement heeft  de commissie voor industrie, onderzoek en energie (ITRE) de leiding voor het thema van hernieuwbare energie.  Zij bestudeert EC-voorstellen en geeft haar input via resoluties (verslagen). 

De nationale ministers voor energie komen samen in de Raad vervoer, telecommunicatie en energie om het Europese beleid voor hernieuwbare energie vast te stellen.
