Stedelijk beleid

Steden worden gezien als de bron én de oplossing voor de actuele economische, maatschappelijke en milieukwesties. Meer dan twee derde van de EU-bevolking woont in de Europese stedelijke gebieden. Deze steden zijn verantwoordelijk voor ongeveer 80 % van het energieverbruik en genereren tot wel 85 % van het Europese bbp. Ze vormen de motor van de Europese economie en fungeren als katalysator voor creativiteit en innovatie in de gehele Unie. Maar het zijn ook de plaatsen waar hardnekkige problemen, zoals werkloosheid, segregatie en armoede, het grootst zijn. Stedelijk beleid reikt daarom verder, over grenzen heen, en dat is de reden dat stedelijke ontwikkeling een belangrijk gegeven is in het regionaal beleid van de EU.
