Onze aarde warmt op, en snel. De gevolgen van klimaatverandering laten zich steeds duidelijker gelden. De dramatische gevolgen hiervan beperken, is één van de belangrijkste prioriteiten van de Europese Unie. Dit doet de EU onder andere aan de hand van haar energiebeleid; minder uitstoot van broeikasgassen, meer energieverbruik uit hernieuwbare energie en meer energie-efficiëntie zijn hierbij key.

Energie en klimaat

Klimaat en energie vormen een gedeelde bevoegdheid tussen de Europese Unie en de EU-lidstaten. Dit betekent dat zowel de EU als de EU- lidstaten juridisch bindende maatregelen mogen nemen, maar dat lidstaten dit enkel kunnen doen op gebieden waarover de EU zelf haar bevoegdheden niet (meer) uitoefent.

Het Directoraat-Generaal Klimaat (CLIMA) ontwerpt het EU- beleid rond het tegengaan van klimaatverandering. CLIMA werd opgericht in 2010 (voorheen deel van DG Milieu) en valt onder de verantwoordelijkheid van de Eurocommissaris voor Klimaatactie en energie, Miguel Arias Cañete (Spanje). Voor energie is het Directoraat-generaal Energie (ENER) bevoegd, waarbij Maroš Šefčovič (Slowakije) de Eurocommissaris voor de Energie Unie is.

De Europarlementsleden bespreken het thema klimaatactie in de Commissie Milieubeheer, Volksgezondheid en Voedselveiligheid (ENVI). Energiezaken worden in de Commissie Industrie, onderzoek en energie (ITRE) van het Europees Parlement behandeld.

De Raad Milieu (ENVI) behandelt naast het milieubeleid van de EU, ook internationale milieukwesties, waaronder klimaatverandering. De Raad TTE ten slotte werkt aan de verwezenlijking van de doelstellingen van de EU op het gebied van vervoer, telecommunicatie en energie.
