"The financial sector, actor of social inclusion?"

A theoretical shift is nowadays necessary in terms of economic development in order to face ongoing socio-economic and environmental realities. One of the solutions imagined would be to draw up a new economic conception, which would take into account the social added-value of specific activities and their overall impact on social cohesion for people experiencing poverty.

In the framework of the European Year 2010 for combating poverty and social exclusion, the European Think Tank Pour la Solidarité advocates that the financial sector has a key social role to display, which has to be highlighted, developed and structured.

Conference objectives:
In the context of burning ongoing challenges to fight against poverty, does the financial sector have a specific role to play in order to favour social inclusion?

What are the limits and opportunities for the financial sector (as far as banks and insurance companies are concerned) to invest in social services?

• Is a specific regulatory framework necessary for that, be it at the national or European level? Which would be other successful approaches?
• Which are the existing initiatives in terms of bank or insurance services, in particular as regards investment socially responsible and micro-credit?

• How could the financial sector use the European Year 2010 to better develop raising-awareness projects and/or actions as regards financial inclusion?
