Selective support MEDIA
Selective support is for groups of at least five European companies distributing a European film outside its home country. The aim is to encourage distributors to invest in promoting and distributing films from other European countries by helping them fund the distribution costs, including the cost of promotion, copies (including digital), dubbing and subtitling. The support is based on a point system so that the most deserving groups are selected.
What activities are eligible?
Distribution of any film from another European country: the film must have been majority produced by a producer/producers established in countries participating in the MEDIA programme and made with a significant participation by professionals from those countries. The film must be a recent work of fiction, cartoon or documentary more than 60 minutes long and from a different country than the country of distribution. The copyright of the film cannot be dated earlier than 4 years before the year of submission of the application Films with a production budget of more than €15 million are not eligible.
How does the support work?
A group of at least 5 distributors (for small films) or 7 distributors (for medium films) should respond (through a coordinator) to the call for proposals. One or more distributors may join a group which is already receiving support to distribute the same film.
Award criteria
The Commission selects the groups with the highest score on a grid taking account of:
- the number of eligible distributors,
- the production cost of the film,
- the origin of the film,
- the type of film,
- the presence of the selling agent/producer as coordinator and his/her nationality.
MEDIA also gives priority to permanent groups of distributors.
