In its Communication on the Future of transport the European Commission foresees a continuing increase of the European population residing in urban areas, raising to 84% in 2050.
This urban sprawl does not only imply more transport needs and problems for the population and a growing demand of goods to be delivered to and in towns, but will also lead to a growing amount of municipal waste. Indeed European citizens are generating on average more than 500 kg of waste per capita a year. All this waste has to be evacuated each day from the town to the waste recovery plants.
Over recent years different inland ports have built up experience in finding sustainable solutions for the collection of waste and the transport of waste from the collection point to the waste recovery plants.
Even if successful, these environmentally-friendly methods of waste removal can become under threat because of budgetary restraints. A price signal could help authorities and waste treatment companies in choosing sustainable solutions for the transport of waste.
The European Federation of inland ports believes it is time to put these best practices in the spotlight and see what more can be done at EU level to support these projects and to encourage other towns to follow this example.
