Symposium "Funding urban public transport in Europe", woensdag 17/6/09
Locatie: Caisse Nationale des Caisses d'Epargne, Parijs

The symposium intends to stimulate the exchange of information and experience on financing systems of local public transport in Europe. Debates will strive to answer the question "which sustainable financing system for public transport could be developed in order to achieve sustainable mobility objectives?". In France, urban public transport is largely supported by a Transport Tax which is paid by employers. Thanks to this specific resource, local public transport authorities were able to develop their networks during the last decades and keep fares quite low for users. However, this Transport Tax is not sufficient anymore to support increasing investments and operational costs. Due to the improvement of their public transport offer through investments in modern mobility systems and their efforts to enhance service quality, Local Authorities have to engage a significant part of their general budget in balancing the transport deficit. Actually, GART leads debates in France to find solutions on funding urban public transport to reverse this trend. In this context, the symposium provides a platform where representatives of local governments from several European countries will examine case studies and present different approaches to financing urban public transport, thus shedding new light on the French situation.
This discussion between representatives from European cities and municipalities aims to clarify the future of public passenger transport services within the European legal framework.
