Land Use and Sustainability -the North Rhine-Westphalian path to a saving land use policy, Brussel, 3 maart 2010

03/03/2010 - 14:30 - 19:00

WAT?

The progressing increase of settlement and traffic areas and the herewith going along rededication of agricultural land, current as „land consumption“ signified, is a huge challenge for all of us, as it decreases permanently and often irretrievably fertile agricultural soils as well as the open space, generally. Therefore the „Council for sustainable Development“ („Rat für nachhaltige Entwicklung“) has already requested in 2002 a reducing of the land consumption within the Federation from ca. 100 hectares/day at present to 30 hectares/day at most in 2020; each country has to contribute to this goal. Actually we are even far away from reaching this goal. Above all, there is no „silver bullet“. Anyway by planning legislation and regulating laws the turn around of the trend was not achievable; here we have to search new, possibly unconventional solutions. Objective of the workshop is as well to demonstrate the North Rhine-Westphalian way, how to diminish the land consumption as searching and discussing further approaches. A “view cross the borders” of our State will show, that we are not the only searchers; representatives of foreign partner agencies as well re presentatives of the North Rhine-Westphalian land users will exemplify their point of view.
