The European Joint Undertaking for ITER and the Development of Fusion Energy, (hereinafter "Fusion for Energy" or "F4E" or "the Joint Undertaking") is a joint undertaking created under the Euratom Treaty by a decision of the Council of the European Union 1. It provides the contribution of Euratom to the ITER international fusion organisation, e.g. with regard to scientific and technological research and development activities.
Specific Details on this Action
ITER cryogenic system is under development and conducting some numerical simulation including the impact of dynamic heat loads from the superconducting coils. The results will be utilized for the cryoplant process design and for the control strategy developments. To perform these tasks, it is essential to understand the thermal hydraulic characteristics of the superconducting magnet systems.
Simulations studies have been conducted by the Russian Efremov Institute (Vicenta code) and fundamental analyses have been performed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Even though the Vincenta code has been widely used for thermal hydraulic analyses of cable-in-conduit conductors (CICCs), their programming are very complex and difficult to implement for wide users. In this regards, 4C or equivalent code is essential to provide more information to establish the process control strategies and to extend the possibilities of analyses based on the variation of heat loads
In this regard, the objectives of this collaboration are:
- to benchmark 4C or equivalent code against the cooldown operation of the Toroidal Field (TF) coils and the dynamic heat load mitigation study for the TF coils and the Central Solenoid (CS)
- to validate the code against the supercritical helium flow loop of CEA.
In order to pursue the above objectives and in compliance with its defined scope, F4E intends to initiate a grant agreement with one or more beneficiaries.
De tekst van de oproep vindt u als bijlage.
According to the Model Grant Agreement 2 the financial contribution of the Joint Undertaking may reach a maximum of: a) 40% of the total eligible costs for research and technological development activities b) 40% of the total eligible costs for demonstration activities c) 100% of the total eligible costs for management activities d) 100% of the total eligible costs for other specific activities.
